FreeNX

NX is a computer program that handles remote X Window System connections based on enterprise class open source technologies by NoMachine. Thanks to the outstanding compression, session resilience and resource management developed on top of the X-Window system, NX makes it possible to run any graphical application across any network connection as if you were sitting in front of your SISSA linux workstation.

When making a connection, you have the server computer (the SISSA linux workstation to which you will connect & upon which you will open the desktop) and the client computer (the computer from which you will make the connection to the server).

The 'freenx' NX server is installed on all SISSA linux workstation.

NX clients are available free of charge from NoMachine's site for various operating systems including Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.

On the machine from which you wish to connect (ie, your home computer) you'll need to download the appropriate NX client for either:

• Windows (NOTE: You should also download the 4 font packages if you're installing NX on Windows)
• Mac OS X
• Linux

NOTE: You want the client to match the OS you're running on the computer you're connecting from, not the computer you're connecting to.

The installation is straightforward,

The software is installed as found; some support will be provided but we cannot guarantee that all applications will run smoothly. If it doesn't work at your home, simply use the SSL gateway or another SSH client.

In the NX client, you login using your EECS Instructional UNIX username

and UNIX password (as if you were logging into cory.eecs using ssh).

  Download the SCUDC NX key file by going to the following URL: 

  ftp://username@ftp.engr.scu.edu//opt/freenx-0.7.2/SCUDC/custom/client.id_dsa.key

  (NOTE: You must replace the string "username" with your actual DC username, then enter your DC password to access and download this file.) 
  (NOTE2: The second double "//" is NOT a typo. It's necessary, don't "fix" it.) 
  (NOTE3: This download will NOT work in Internet Explorer 6 or earlier due to a limitation it has. Please use a different browser like FireFox or a graphical FTP client like WS-FTP) 

  Save it somewhere you can remember, like your Desktop.
  Click on the "Key..." buttion in the NX configuration screen.
  Click "Import"
  Navigate to where you saved the keyfile you previously downloaded and select the file (client.id_dsa.key)
  Click "Ok"
  Click "Save"
  Click "Ok"
  Tell it you want to save your settings. 

To connect to one of our servers:

• You must import our ssh key into your local NX client. We have

replaced the default ssh public key that comes with NX. Users on our

  systems will need to obtain the EECS Instructional ssh key for NX from 
  the course instructor or from inst@eecs.berkeley.edu.  To import the 
  key, start 'nxclient' on your local computer, locate the option to 
  update the key, and either load in the file or paste a copy of the key.  
  Without it, you will get the error "Authentication failed".
