Alternative e-mail archive
Generally you can choice an alternative e-mail archive:
Archiving emails on your sector/area filesystem or on a local area

If you have a lot of old emails, and the previous recipes are not effective to free enough space for your mailbox, the best option that remain is to archive the old emails on the filesystem.
Filesystem quota issue
If you use Thunderbird on a sector/area workstation, it is better if you verify first your quota on your sector/area filesystem.
If your residual quota on the fileserver is low, the only choice is to change the location of Thunderbird's local folders, selecting a local (not backuped) path (for example: the /scratch area).
To change the local folders path, you have to change your Thunderbird Account settings:
- for Windows and Mac OS Tools → Account Settings
- for Linux Edit → Account Settings
- select Local Folders on the left section,
- change the path to a new folder choosing between …
- in your main area (on your sector/area filesystem) if you have quota;
- or in a workstation's local filesystem (remember that if you use a local disk of a workstations, you will have to do by yourself a periodical backup of the local folders. The same if you use Thunderbird on your laptop.
- and then confirm selecting the OK button.
- Please note: if you have old emails in the local folders you have to copy them manually.
Setting and using the archive on filesystem feature

you have to change your Thunderbird Account settings:
- for Windows and Mac OS Tools → Account Settings,
- for Linux Edit → Account Settings,
- select Copies & Folders on the left section,
- in the drop-down menù Archives Folders on select Local folders,
- customize archiving clicking on the button Archive options.
The options provide a choice for yearly/montly subdivision of the archive and an option for folders structure preservation. Select the best choice for you and confirm the settings selecting the OK button.
After the reconfiguration of the archive feature, you can archive a group of messages selecting them in a folder, by right clicking on the selection and choosing Archive from the context menu.
