Multi-Factor Authentication

Versione in italiano

ITCS - in full agreement with the SISSA Management - has decided to activate multi-factor authentication (MFA) to counter the increasingly frequent cases of violation of email inboxes and associated cloud services.

What is multi-factor authentication?

Multi-Factor Authentication (or MFA) - sometimes reduced to “Two-Factor Authentication” (or 2FA) - is a system that guarantees greater security during the access phase to your email mailbox or your Microsoft 365 account.

How does Microsoft's multi-factor authentication work?

Access to Microsoft services with MFA involves receiving a temporary code on your smartphone, which is requested after entering your user ID and password.

To receive the temporary code you can use:

  1. Microsoft Authenticator app, downloadable for free on Android and IOS stores;
  2. third-party authentication apps, such as Google Authenticator;
  3. SMS (or call), if you do not want or cannot install applications on your phone.

While other authentication systems work, we recommend the Microsoft Authenticator app for ease of use.

How to set up MFA?

1. Go to the link https://aka.ms/MFASetup in your browser

2. Log in with your user id in the form username@sissa.it and with your SISSA password.

3. The system will warn you that more information is needed: click on the Next button. 400
4. Install the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone and click Next.
NOTE: If you DO NOT want to install the app on your device, you can use SMS by skipping to step 9. 400
5. Follow the instructions on the next screen and click Next on the web page. 400
6. In the Microsoft Authenticator app, add a new account by clicking the “+” sign and select “Work or school account”. Scan the QR code and then click Next on the web page. 400
7. The screen will offer a two-digit number which must be entered into the Microsoft Authenticator app for verification. 400
8. The procedure has concluded. 400
9. If you prefer not to use the Microsoft Authenticator app, you can choose to configure a different method: “Telephone”, meaning MOBILE. 400
10. An SMS will be sent with a code to enter on the page. 400
11. The procedure is finished. 400
