Alpine will be forced to read e-mail using IMAP. So the first time alpine will ask you your SISSA username and your SISSA password and if you wish to “ Preserve password on DISK for next login? ”
Answer “ Y ” if you want to save it (encrypted) so you will not have to enter your password anymore using alpine. Your password, encrypted, will be put in the file .pine.pwd in your home directory.

To see the e-mails in a folder:

  • select the folder using the arrows (for example Sent );
  • type <ENTER>.

To see the contents of hierarchical folders:

  • select the folder using the arrows (for example pippo[.]);
  • type “ > ” (and NOT <ENTER> !!!);
  • then you can see the e-mails inside it and its sub-folders names.

To return to a higher level folder press the “ < ” key.

To create new folders:

  • type “ L ” (ListFldrs) then type “ a ” (add);
  • alpine will ask you the new_foldername.

If you now want a new sub-folder inside an existing folder (for example pluto), you have to type pluto.newsubfoldername

Do not try to move a lot of e-mails (or a folder or a subfolder) using alpine, because you can move one e-mail at a time.
We suggest to use a grafic e-mail client (such as thuderbird, mozilla-mail….it depends on the software installed in your pc).
Using drag&drop (with the mouse) you can move the selected subfolder where do you prefer and it easy to move a group of selected mails in another place.

To display/hide the complete header

To display/hide the complete header of an e-mail press “ h ”.

If you use thunderbird for the first time, please follow the instructions on the following pages depending on your Thunderbird version:
How to configure Thunderbird 17.x to use SISSA e-mail services

How to configure Thunderbird 10.x to use SISSA e-mail services

How to configure Thunderbird 1.5.x & 2.x to use SISSA e-mail services

If you have already used thunderbird

If you have already used thunderbird, please check the setting:

Go to the menu: Account Settings –> Server Settings

  • (IMAP) Server Name: has to contain imap.sissa.it
  • enable the secure SSL connection (if you want to use port 993) or TLS connection (if you want to use port 143).

As outgoing SMTP server, go to the menu: Account Settings –> Outgoing Server SMTP:

  • (SMTP) Server Name: has to contain smtp.sissa.it
  • Fill the Port field with 587 or 465
  • check the box Use Name and Password, and fill the fields with your SISSA username
  • enable Use secure connection with TLS (if you want to use port 587) or SSL (if you want to use port 465).

If you need more information about how to check the setting and how to change it,
you can read the pages:

Upgrading thunderbird version, some configuration could be involuntarily and automatically modified. We suggest you to check your account settings parameters. Please give a look at the page Check your Thunderbird configuration (v. 10.x - examples on Linux o.s.)

To know which is the path of your local e-mail folders

If you wish to check the path of your e-mail local folders, because (some examples):

  • you need to copy them on a CD later or
  • you want to be sure that they are saved in a useful area (not /scratch) on your laptop or in a subdirectory of your home directory:

Go to the menu: Account Settings –> Local folders –> Local directory:………….

Note about Mozilla: The settings are the same as in thunderbird, for the IMAP and SMTP servers.

To display the complete header of an e-mail, open the message and then select from the menu View –> Headers –> All.

With this configuration:

set hostname=sissa.it
set folder=imaps://imap.sissa.it/
set mail_check=30
set mbox=imaps://imap.sissa.it/INBOX
set certificate_file=~/.mutt_cert
set record=imaps://imap.sissa.it/Sent
set spoolfile=imaps://imap.sissa.it/INBOX

mutt will see folders AND sub-folders; when you run mutt you will see your INBOX e-mails and, to see the other folders, you must type “ c ” and then <TAB> to get a complete list.
In this list the folders with a “ + ” character will be hierarchical folders.

To visualize the e-mail inside the folders you have to type the <SPACE BAR> over the folder to access to it. You can access to the folder only if its name contains a “ + ”.

To create a new folder press a “ C ” from the folder list display.

To create the first subfolder (named for example child) of an already existing folder (named for example parent),
you have to create it as parent.child
When you access to the subfolder child, you can create other subfolders with their subfolder name only, without parent.
Mutt will set the right path for you.
